National Cocoa Shell NewsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEBoerner Botanical Gardens Gets A Sweet Surprise!HALES CORNERS,WIS(June 24, 2003) - The smell of chocolate is in the air at the Boerner Botanical Gardens. Cocoa shell mulch is being used in the Gardens, thanks to a large donation from National Cocoa Shell Distribution Inc., a Milwaukee-based distributor of Blommer Cocoa Shell Mulch. As visitors enter the Gardens, the chocolate scent has people talking. “It’s fun hearing people’s comments. They can’t quite seem to place it,” says horticulturist Karen Wendler. She adds that many visitors are surprised to find that the chocolate aroma comes from the mulch. In early June, National Cocoa Shell delivered a truckload of Blommer Cocoa Shells to the Gardens. It took a crew of thirty to complete the task of mulching all of the beds with the shipment of 1,480 bags. The mulch is in the trial, annual, herb and rock gardens. “It accents the plants, really makes them stand out. Plus, the donation really extended my budget, allowing me to buy other materials the Gardens needed,” says Gardens Director Shirley Dommer. National Cocoa Shell President, Charles Drake, says the decision to donate mulch was an easy one. “Visitors to the Boerner Botanical Gardens deserve beautiful blooms and cocoa shell mulch is the best way to guarantee great results in any garden,” Drake notes. The rich mulch comes from the shell of the cocoa bean. During the roasting process, the bean separates from the shell. Once roasting is complete, the leftover shells make a great addition to any garden. Horticulturists at the Gardens say the cocoa shells not only look better than other mulch, they also dramatically cut down the need for watering. Gardeners also love cocoa shell mulch because it works well for all kinds of plants to keep away pests and to keep down weeds, while at the same time providing essential soil nutrients.
